COVID-19: Update regarding operations at the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO)

Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) has announced that deadlines will be extended for patent, trademark and industrial design matters.  Specifically, a deadline for doing any act which falls within the time period beginning on March 16, 2020 and ending on March 31, 2020, is deemed extended to the next day (which we currently understand to be April 1, 2020).  As circumstances continue to unfold, CIPO may decide to extend this period of time, as warranted.  We have also been advised that CIPO remains open and in operation at this time; however, clients should expect significant delays in all CIPO services.
